Deregulation, or “Choice” hasn’t worked as planned
Unfortunately for many consumers in Ohio, “choice” hasn’t worked as it was planned to do. There are currently very few marketers offering service to residential consumers.

Competitive suppliers not available
As of the beginning of 2004, only the First Energy companies (who tend have higher electric rates) have met with any success. Ohio Edison had a little over 30 percent of their customers switch, the majority of which did so as a result of community-based aggregation programs. Aggregation allows local governments and community groups to form a buying pool for purchase of electricity.

American Electric Power (including Columbus Southern Power and Ohio Power) as well as Dayton Power & Light have 0 percent switched, largely due to no marketers willing to supply power to their customers.
